Artists began using surveillance video in art installations this took viewing art from a private function to a public one. The viewer was put on display as part of the art. This can give an art piece a more sinister feel. Today this kind of view isn't the same because reality TV took the sinisterness out of surveillance as well as the large presence of surveillance. It's everywhere.

It is indeed everywhere. But what if this surveillance was being used without one's consent? That could be perceived as pretty (arguably) sinister, no?
