Interactive Digital Art

 Art installations began incorporating the viewer in art but digital art is allowing the viewer to begin to control parts of the art (Rush 183). As technology progresses more and more art can be interactive for the viewer. Using the internet an artist could make an art website that is interactive for the viewer. But even more, we are beginning to see virtual reality devices become more affordable. Mainly used for gaming now but it could be and most likely will be used by artists to create very interactive experiences.

Surveillance Art

 Artists began using surveillance video in art installations this took viewing art from a private function to a public one. The viewer was put on display as part of the art. This can give an art piece a more sinister feel. Today this kind of view isn't the same because reality TV took the sinisterness out of surveillance as well as the large presence of surveillance. It's everywhere.

Video Installation

 Installation art is more of an experience than just a piece of art. Video installation can really put the viewer into the piece itself. Giving the viewer a new experience and invoking new and different kinds of emotions in art. This brought a new experience to the art world.

Wolf Vostell

 Wolf Vostell is another example of art being the intention of a thing rather than the thing itself he said "Marcel Duchamp has declared readymade objects as art, and the Futurists declared noises as art. It is an important characteristic of my efforts and those of my colleagues to declare as art the total event, comprising noise/object/movement/color/and psychology - a merging of elements so that life(man) can be art" (Rush 125). I really like this quote because he is saying that anything and everything can be art even we are art. The idea is more important than the thing itself.

Intention

 Rush explains art in a way that made something click for me. I have been studying art and art history for a little while now and I guess it never made sense where the line of what art is and what art isn't. I've looked at many pieces of art that I think how is that art? It seemed so random to me. Rush said "Art lives in the intentionality of the artist"(87). It makes so much more sense now. Artists aren't just saying I'm going to put this box here and call it an art they have an entire thought process and idea that they need to share and that's how they execute it.

Andy Warhol and Video Art

 Andy Warhol was one of the first to show video art (Rush 87). He was also among the first to use portable video cameras. The fact that he was already a known and established artist and that he used video to add to his practice is what made him one of the first along with Nam June Paik. Warhol continued to use video, but Paik made it his preferred medium.

Influence on Today.

 Techniques of using multimedia in dance and theatre have carried on today. In the '90s Bands begun using video as part of their concert experience. Many bands still do this today. Many include not only video of themselves to make viewing easier for large arenas but also to add more to the show (Rush 75). At a concert, I went to they had a video of another artist's play that they did a collab with as well as other sorts of visuals.
